What is he doing exactly?
In November 2024, Akshay will become the first person in history to ski approximately 1700 miles/2700km (it could be more by the end of the journey) from coast to coast across Antarctica without any dogs, kites, or resupplies. He will be completely alone dragging a 400 lbs/181 kg sled with all his food and supplies for 110 days. The journey will start at the Bay of Whales on the Ross Ice Shelf, go up the Reedy Glacier to the South Pole and end at the Filchner Ice Shelf on the other end of the continent. Akshay will be solo and unsupported for the entire journey in one of the most hostile and unforgiving environments on the planet.
Hasn't the Antarctic been crossed before?
A complete coast to coast crossing of Antarctica, without kites or dogs has never been accomplished. In 1997, legendary polar explorer Borge Ousland was the first man to cross Antarctica coast to coast. When he made the solo crossing, it had never been done before, so he used a small kite for part of the journey. The goal was to cross Antarctica. Style evolutions, such as doing it without a kite, inevitably follow once the feat has been pioneered. Akshay is humbly following in his footsteps, man-hauling all his supplies across the continent to accomplish this feat without a kite or dogs. In 2018, Colin O'Brady claimed to cross Antarctica, but he did not. He traversed the land mass (his journey was 1455km, Borge's was 2845km, Akshay's will be about 2700km) while using the SPOT road (a groomed and marked track across the polar plateau), so it was neither a crossing, nor unsupported.
Why would he do this?
Like any big goal, there are selfish and selfless reasons. Selfishly, Akshay wants to go on his own spiritual journey to push himself beyond his limits in order to experience transcendence, enlightenment and awaken his own divinity within. Selflessly, he wants to bring back the wisdom from the edge to help others navigate their own "Antarctic crossings," whatever they may be. As he puts it, "because I get to play so far out on the edge, in such intense extremes, I get to open doors into the human soul that have rarely been opened before, doors that can only be opened in the depths of solitude and suffering. I have to battle the dragon to find the treasure. My responsibility to earn this life I've been gifted is to bring back those treasures and share them with my human family." The treasures he brings back have already helped thousands of people all over the world bring light into their darkness, and once he completes this journey, we know it will help millions more.
Where will my donation go?
Every dollar donated, and the entire $750,000, will go to ALE (Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions) for all expedition logistics, including the following:
- One seat on return flights from Punta Arenas to our Antarctic base camp at Union Glacier with up to 200 kg of baggage,
- All meals at Union Glacier,
- Supply of 7 US gallons of Coleman white gas fuel to you at Union Glacier,
- A shared drop-off flight from Union Glacier to the north end of Berkner Island, to the ALE landing site,
- Expedition support (provision of medical cover, 24-hour communications cover and Emergency Response support),
- A pick-up flight from the Bay of Whales,
- Cargo handling fee,
- Contribution to staff wages for late season extension,
- Cost of extending aircraft contracts for late season extension,
- Additional costs for return flight from Union Glacier to Punta Arenas by turboprop aircraft via King George Island.
This quote and logistical plan was given to Akshay by ALE, so all of the money will go to them to fund the crossing. In the short term, it will go into a separate holding account that Akshay has created solely for this expedition. The money will then be sent to ALE months before the expedition. Akshay will not pocket a single dollar from this crowdfunding campaign.
Is my donation tax deductible?
The short answer is no, it is not. Akshay has founded a registered 501c3, non-profit called The Fearvana Foundation. However, Akshay and his team felt it would be out of integrity (potentially even illegal) to run donations for an Antarctic crossing through the nonprofit, as the donations do not go directly to a charitable cause. These donations go to a company (ALE - Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions) to fund an expedition. Therefore, since the money does not go to a non-profit, the donation is not tax deductible.
